After work some people were going out for a drink and so I joined them. While we were sitting there, I suggested we go down to the Lower East Side and try our hand at finding some good music to listen to. We ended up going to the Living Room, and checking out the adverts lining the front window. I saw that Jesse Harris was playing and so we stopped in. Jesse Harris co-wrote a couple of the songs on Norah Jones’ first album, and his stuff is really cool. He had a full band and with an organ and his set was definitely the best of the night.
The highlight of the night, however, was when Mike Viola took the stage before Jesse. Mike Viola was par for course as far as New York City singer/songwriters go. He was good but showy and not so hot at it. Nearing the end of his set, he says, “I have three songs left so I want to call a friend up. We met a month ago, and became fast friends. Well…John Wesley Harding.”
I fainted.
No, but seriously…John Wesley Harding. I was in the company of a minor legend. It was a good night.
My shows at Sidewalk and MoMA last week went smashingly. Anybody who missed my show at MoMA should be bummed because it was the best I have ever sounded: you can decide for yourself what that really means. The second set at MoMA was loads of fun, though, because I played with a couple of incredible musicians. They did a lot of old-timey jazz covers, and I backed them up on Drums. Basically what I am trying to say here is that the MoMA show was the heat, and you may have missed it altogether. Shame.
I haven’t booked anymore shows for the coming weeks, but I will be booking them soon so you should stay tuned and then come out and listen to me.
The best part about playing any show is that people always want to buy you beers. The best part about MoMA was that I could drink as much as I wanted on the cafe’s tab. Perk. That launched me into the “holiday” weekend where I just hopped from party to party with my bloodied up face (I went as myself after I fell off my roof two months ago). So ending my weekend on monday night, I believe it is time for me to stop drinking a little and focus on something else. Something more productive. I’ll get back to you on that.
